Moderntechnologyhasmadeiteasierforscientiststodateeachpainting.Theyusedaprocesscalledtheuranium-thoriummethodtoestimatetheage.

Thescientistsremovedsmallpiecesofrockmaterialthathadformedonthesurfaceoftheartwork,andstudiedtheminalaboratory.Theyfoundthecaveartdatesbackto64,yearsago.

DirkHoffmann,ofGermany’sMaxPlanckInstitute,saidtheartworkissimple,butimportantforwhatitrepresents.Hesaidoneworkisacollectionsoflinesthatlooklikealadder;theothersincluderedmarksandroundedobjectsonrockformations.Anotherpaintingisintheshapeofahand.
